News from the Board of Directors

SUZANNE McKIM

Suzanne McKim Completes Term
as Board Chair

SUZANNE McKIM has completed her term as chair of the board of directors. She will continue to serve as an advisory member. At the Annual Meeting in May, Suzanne was awarded a clock with a photo of her POOCH dog, Smith, in recognition of her contributions. Not only has Suzanne made substantial financial donations to Project POOCH, she has also been instrumental in finding new donors and in spreading the word about the good work the POOCH youths do for homeless dogs.

Executive Director, JOAN DALTON, expressed her appreciation of Suzanne's willingness to make herself available to meet with Oregon Youth Authority administrators on a regular basis.

BARBARA COLES, who is currently Secretary of the board, has agreed to take over the duties of the chair. Her unexpired term as Secretary will be completed by SUSIE WAKI, board member and volunteer coordinator for the program.

Joy Soares
JOY SOARES

Joy Soares Accepts a New Job in Hawaii

JOY SOARES flew from Portland to Hawaii in April to begin a new job in the health care field. Joy has assisted Project POOCH financially, as a board member, and through her expertise as a lobbyist at the Oregon legislature. In addition, she has practiced yoga for many years and taught two yoga classes to POOCH youths to help them learn positive methods for reducing stress. She will continue to support POOCH from her new home in Hawaii.

Charles Allis
CHARLIE ALLIS

Charles D. Allis Joins the Board

CHARLIE ALLIS was unanimously elected as a new member at the May meeting. Charlie has been a staunch supporter for a number of years. He has secured donations for POOCH building projects, and has made numerous personal donations, including a computer for a youth leaving corrections to take to college and a van for transporting dogs. He is involved in many public service activities, and is chair emeritus of the OHSU Foundation, a board member of the Goodwill Vocational Foundation, and Head Regional Volunteer for CARE International.

In addition, he frequently meets with POOCH youths preparing for release - guiding them through practice job interviews, explaining workplace etiquette, and discussing their plans for the future. The youths respect the example he provides as a retiree who stays active riding his bicycle daily and working to make the world a better place.
