Project POOCH Youths Pass Pet Care Technician Levels 1 & 2
ONE OF THE OPPORTUNITIES provided to youths in Project POOCH is the chance to study for
and take the Certified Pet Care Technician, Level 1 and 2 tests.
The tests were developed by the
Pet Care Services Association
in Colorado Springs, CO.
The certification program promotes the professional development of pet care service
industry professionals, ensuring candidates have the necessary knowledge and skills to offer responsible pet care.
Once a youth passes either test, he receives a certificate to help him find employment when he leaves corrections.
To date, 25 POOCH youths have successfully passed Pet Care Technician 1, and eight youths have completed and
passed Pet Care Technician 2.
Youths Learn Job Skills
THANKS TO A DONATION FROM RICH KRUEGER, Project POOCH volunteer, Tom Steinhoff,
headed to Home Depot and loaded the POOCH van with sheets of plywood and fiber board so that the youths could learn some
basic remodeling skills needed to replace urine soaked walls in an older part of the kennel.
Youths learned how to use a measuring tape, cut plywood, how to use a drill and hammer along with learning the importance of
teamwork. This was a first experience for many of the youths. The job just needs some finishing touches before the donor visits to
see the results.
