When Austin knows you, he is sweet, playful and eager to be at your side. However he does need some time to build a relationship and get to know you. He can be sensitive about new situations but is realizing that he doesn’t have to be scared of novel experiences.
Austin enjoys being around his dog friends and can adapt his place style to his friends’ needs. He is his most confident with his dog friends and we believe he would do best in a home with another dog.
Right now Austin is working on his leash skills with the youth, and enjoying going on long walks on campus with staff. He is still a bit anxious to focus on basic obedience, so we work on pattern games to help hims regulate his anxieties and counter conditioning his nerves around people and new situations.
If you’re looking for a dog who makes you feel chosen when he loves up on you, Austin might be that special one. He just wants someone to take the time to make him feel comfortable, safe, and secure.
Austin’s ideal home would have another dog, to help him gain confidence, a family with patience to understand that he will need their help to navigate the world. Austin has had a home visit in the past and we learned that in that environment he shows some reactivity to strangers and other dogs. POOCH would be providing at least one training session with our lead trainer to help Austin learn the ropes and settle into a new home.

Special Considerations
Austin is currently on an anxiety medication to help him deal with the more chaotic shelter environment. This may or may not need to be an ongoing medication as he gets adopted and settled into a home.
Austin arrived at POOCH with some health issues. He had Giardia when he arrived, and it took a strong course of antibiotics to clear it from his system. Upon recovering from Giardia, he developed an ileus (a section of paralyzed bowel) and lost some weight, but is now on the mend. His liver function was impacted by the Giardia, and he is now on liver supplements. He will need repeat bloodwork in August, which POOCH will cover if he is adopted before then.

Will go home with a leash, harness, toys, a bed, two monthly doses of flea/tick/heartworm medication (value: $60), and a week’s worth of food
